Kind A Blue
Like every other story of hopes and dreams, CATS IN LOVE began life as a rock band hell-bent on getting its brand of retro rock out to the world. And like every other fable of lofty ambitions, nothing ever quite works out as planned. While the band’s personnel eased through a revolving door over the years, the band currently playing is LOHAN (guitars, vocals), EU GENE (bass) and RASHAAD (drums). CATS IN LOVE is under no grand illusion that life is going to be easy plying a route less-travelled, but the band’s guiding light has always been the music, and that’s exactly what these five musicians live (and die) for. And customary with rock music from the golden era of the genre – 60s and 70s – CATS IN LOVE throws in smatterings of all things that have…
Northern Jazz Unit was formed by Jerome Quah a decade ago as a platform to explore jazz in a combo setup. The group is led by pianist Jerome Quah, Cain James Peterson (Drums), Foo YH (Double Bass) and Issac Teh on the saxophone. NJU is based in Penang and the group actively performs in corporate functions, wedding events as well in Pg’s local joints. In 2022, NJU has performed in Penang Jazz Society’s jazz series known as Let’s Jazz Again @ the E&O. The group has performed in various jazz festivals such as KL International Jazz Festival (2008), Penang Island Jazz Festival (2015) and Malaysian Jazz Piano Festival (2019).
The Only Malaysian Group that continues to keep the flame for psychedelic rock, The Stalemate Factor draws its inspiration from the surreal and trippy music of the 1960s. The band comprises Martin Vengadesan (vocals/keyboards), Thomas Toh (guitars), Joanne Timbuong (vocals), Harrie Sharm (bass) and Rudolf Frank (drums). Its live set includes the band’s take on psych era classics such as Procol Harum’s A Whiter Shade of Pale and Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds by the Beatles.
Newcomers to the band can expect a range of unscripted jams, whimsical themes and experimental motifs.
Much of the material is drawn from the third album by the Martin Vengadesan & The Stalemate Factor which is called The Knight’s Flight. It is also the third album in a series, with the first album The Queen’s Gambit being a folk-rock work with personal themes while the second album The Bishop’s Sacrifice is a harder rocking affair with songs about politics and religion.
A fourth Stalemate Factor album entitled The Rook’s Siege is also being recorded now.

The “KoolSkool Duet” comprises Aznaff Hamazah on saxophones and Israq Suyono on acoustic guitar. By qualification, both of them have a Bachelor and Master in Music respectively.
Hence, they have a vast experience in music too specialising more on jazz standards, Malay classics and easy listening tunes. They have performed in many major concerts and high profile functions such as at the KL International Jazz Festivals, cocktail for the Princess of Belgium to name a few.
To their credit, “KoolSkool Duet” had also recorded two jazz albums to-date. They are surely an interesting acoustic duo to watch with their peculiar and very pleasant sound.
